Chapter Eighteen

Jack left the interview room and headed back upstairs into their Incident Room, where he gathered the rest of the team.

‘He’s back in his cell but massively kicking off,’ Jim informed them as he walked in, followed by Detective Superintendent Robinson.

‘Pretend I’m not here, Jack,’ Paul Robinson said and sat.

‘Can you get a magistrate to sign off a warrant to search Aaron Stamp’s address, please, sir? His mother lives with him. Well, he lives with his mother. When I had a quick look last time, I saw nothing of interest, but it looks like we caught him off guard. We might get a laptop or something?’

‘No problem, Jack.’ The super nodded at Clifton. ‘Sort it for me, son, and I’ll get it signed off.

Clifton left the incident room just as Jack said, ‘OK, I want Aaron’s finances checked, see if he was in debt and if he’s received any large and unusual payments. If we consider trafficking, then money will certainly be involved. He also appears to have an unhealthy interest in sex, so get the tech guys to thoroughly search his laptop once we have it. DC Marshall can liaise on that. I now no longer consider Ella Skinner, a suspect.’

‘We have something from Lewis’ laptop,’ Natalie added.

‘Yeah?’ Jack’s eyes lit up.

‘Lewis’ laptop was handed to digital forensics, which yielded interesting results. There were no internet searches for kidnap, concealment, murder, or anything in Daisy’s name. But, whilst it doesn’t connect Lewis to Daisy, they found a lot of porn—plenty of young women the officer considered girls, but all were of legal age and consensual. Just. They were found on the hard drive, recovered from deleted files and salvaged from deleted Internet history.’

It didn’t mean the man was innocent, but it hopefully meant he had moved on from perving on little girls.

‘We also got nothing from Lewis’ phone because it is a dumbphone, but I’ve asked for the numbers in his contacts to be traced as you requested. So we’re still waiting for the results.’

‘Good, thanks, Natalie.’ He turned to Jim. ‘Did you do a background check on Boris Petrov for me?’

‘I did, sir. It all checks out. Kai cared for Boris, even acting as a mentor as the Russian grew older.’

Jack nodded at the DI but suddenly felt overwhelming fatigue. He walked to the Big Board and massaged his temples.

Robinson clapped Jack on the shoulder before looking around at the team. ‘You’ve done a flawless job so far, but I think it’s time you all went home and got some rest. Especially you, Jack. This is your first week back as an MIT detective. It’s much harder than being part of CID.’

‘I think there may be a chance that she’s still alive, sir,’ Jack said, ‘so I can’t go home just yet. And, if the abductor is emulating Jackson, then I’m awaiting a call from them.’

‘Uniform are still out canvassing houses, and we are following up on leads from the appeal,’ Robinson said. ‘You can’t work to your full potential when you’re all shattered.
