Chapter Eighteen
Jack left the interview room and headed back upstairs into their Incident Room, where he gathered the rest of the team.
âHeâs back in his cell but massively kicking off,â Jim informed them as he walked in, followed by Detective Superintendent Robinson.
âPretend Iâm not here, Jack,â Paul Robinson said and sat.
âCan you get a magistrate to sign off a warrant to search Aaron Stampâs address, please, sir? His mother lives with him. Well, he lives with his mother. When I had a quick look last time, I saw nothing of interest, but it looks like we caught him off guard. We might get a laptop or something?â
âNo problem, Jack.â The super nodded at Clifton. âSort it for me, son, and Iâll get it signed off.
Clifton left the incident room just as Jack said, âOK, I want Aaronâs finances checked, see if he was in debt and if heâs received any large and unusual payments. If we consider trafficking, then money will certainly be involved. He also appears to have an unhealthy interest in sex, so get the tech guys to thoroughly search his laptop once we have it. DC Marshall can liaise on that. I now no longer consider Ella Skinner, a suspect.â
âWe have something from Lewisâ laptop,â Natalie added.
âYeah?â Jackâs eyes lit up.
âLewisâ laptop was handed to digital forensics, which yielded interesting results. There were no internet searches for kidnap, concealment, murder, or anything in Daisyâs name. But, whilst it doesnât connect Lewis to Daisy, they found a lot of pornâplenty of young women the officer considered girls, but all were of legal age and consensual. Just. They were found on the hard drive, recovered from deleted files and salvaged from deleted Internet history.â
It didnât mean the man was innocent, but it hopefully meant he had moved on from perving on little girls.
âWe also got nothing from Lewisâ phone because it is a dumbphone, but Iâve asked for the numbers in his contacts to be traced as you requested. So weâre still waiting for the results.â
âGood, thanks, Natalie.â He turned to Jim. âDid you do a background check on Boris Petrov for me?â
âI did, sir. It all checks out. Kai cared for Boris, even acting as a mentor as the Russian grew older.â
Jack nodded at the DI but suddenly felt overwhelming fatigue. He walked to the Big Board and massaged his temples.
Robinson clapped Jack on the shoulder before looking around at the team. âYouâve done a flawless job so far, but I think itâs time you all went home and got some rest. Especially you, Jack. This is your first week back as an MIT detective. Itâs much harder than being part of CID.â
âI think there may be a chance that sheâs still alive, sir,â Jack said, âso I canât go home just yet. And, if the abductor is emulating Jackson, then Iâm awaiting a call from them.â
âUniform are still out canvassing houses, and we are following up on leads from the appeal,â Robinson said. âYou canât work to your full potential when youâre all shattered.
